#025 - Rainbow
not a state of mind, but I mean there is a rainbow! Isn't that cool?! My thoughts are also very colorful.
Dear people of the internet,
it’s me again, here to tell you a little something about my week, starting with the old question of how my priorities of last week went. Namely, how I did with the priorities, reestablishing my reading habit, writing a second draft for a blog post idea I had, and lastly working on my game.
Starting, with my literary adventures, I read in a book almost every day this week, although only fiction, which is uncommon for me to say the least. My neighbors gave me a detective story as a present, as I feed their cats, while they were away, and unexpectedly I read most of said story during the last week.
Taking a look at my second draft, I first began with starting from scratch on the whole concept. I made the topic, the thing I want to express, clearer to myself and narrowed the idea down to a fraction of the original size by metaphorically cleaning up the mess of idea the first draft was. This week, I had stumbled upon the concept of Mini-Essays, little texts narrowly describing only one idea in only a few hundred words, and applied said knowledge to the draft. It helped.
Lastly, my game, a challenging tetris-like with hexagon, easily the thing I spent the most time on this week, had me create its UI and settings, leading to me calling this week, the visual week. Never before, had I worked on UI elements or even really mouse detection in PyGame, so I started reading through a bit of sample code and finding out how one would go about creating different menus. Further, I decided on the input methods, allowing for both control through the mouse and the arrow keys.
I started with a title screen, showing off different tetrahexes, when the user is about to enter one of the sub-menus. The tetrahexes are in color and shape metaphorical representations of the sub-menu. The highscores page, for example, is symbolized by a gold (color of a trophy) straight tetrahex reaching towards the top.
I, also created a simple function to create myself different menus all with the same pattern, but different content. This function creates the Settings, Highscore and About pages.
The Highscore pages, were a bit more complex to create, as they need to be generated a new, each time new Highscores are saved.
To spice things up a little, I created different menu types for both the selection of different game modes and the size of the polyhexes. I am particularly fond of the last one: It’s a rainbow!
I just didn’t come to updating the actual visuals of the game, before Easter hit. Well…
Lightning Round:
Besides, my priorities, I spend some time this week thinking about other game ideas. I realized that I really like survival-sandbox/crafting games.
Further, I learned a bit about acronyms, initialisms and abbreviations in general.
Also while listening to this particular white noise video, I asked myself why it’s called white noise and then learned about the colors of noise, and how they are related to the spectrum of visible light.
I also started playing the New York Times Game Connections, where you have to fit 16 words in four different categories of four words. Try today’s puzzle for yourself.
I realized, that I had a few soil humidity sensors lying around and made a plan to grab some data from my raised vegetable bed.
My priorities for next week are…
working on my game
establishing my new note to flash card system as a daily study routine
reestablishing my workout routine, which essentially went extinct during the easter break
Ole370’s Weekly Report will return next week…
